Stool Quality Guide

Your dog’s daily report card.

Why Stool Matters

Stool tells the truth about feeding. Inukshuk’s formulas are highly digestible, which means compact, firmer stools when portions are correct.
Changes in consistency, color, or volume often trace back to feeding amounts, hydration, or sudden diet changes, not the formula itself.
Learning to “read” stool helps you fine-tune portions long before issues appear.

The Stool Scale (1 – 7)

Score Description What It Means What to Do
1–2 Dry, small, hard, crumbly Dehydration or too little food Add water to meals, check hydration
3 Firm, compact, easy pick-up Perfect digestion and portion Keep feeding as is
4–5 Soft, loses shape when picked up Slight overfeeding or fast transition Reduce portions 5–10 %, slow transition
6–7 Watery, runny, mucous Underfeeding, stress, or GI upset Add food gradually, feed smaller meals more often, monitor 48 hrs

Aiming for a 2–3 on this scale keeps cleanup easy and digestion efficient.

Common Causes of Stool Changes

  • Portion accuracy: heaping scoops or guessing by eye.

  • Sudden diet switch: always transition over 5–7 days.

  • Activity swings: more exercise burns through energy faster.

  • Hydration: ensure fresh water is available at all times.

  • Treats & extras: rich add-ons can throw off balance.

When to Adjust Feeding

  • Large, soft stools: trim portions slightly.

  • Small, loose stools + low energy: increase 5–10 %.

  • Persistent loose stool: slow the transition or check for parasites.

Re-evaluate after 3–5 days of consistent feeding before making another change.

  • Visit the Feeding Inukshuk — How to Feed page for precision feeding

  • Store food in a cool, dry area.

  • Keep feeding times consistent.

  • Track changes; photos help if consulting your vet.
